UK Grid Shared Firewall FAQ

What is a firewall cluster?

Having a firewall cluster means that the firewall can still function at 100% if either one of the firewall nodes fails or if one of our distributions layer switches fails. The firewall operates in HA mode which means one firewall is active and forwards packets and the other firewall is also active, however, it only forwards packets should it detect a failure with the primary.

Why use a shared firewall?

A shared firewall is a low cost way of protecting your web environment. It means our customers don't have to pay out on exepensive hardware and have the expertise to maintain a firewall. Policy changes can be carried out at customers request by UK Grid's technical staff. The firewall cluster is also monitored 24 x 7 by our Network Management servers and network engineers.

How does this service work?

Firstly we consult with our customer and configure a firewall policy based on their requirments. We allocate our customers with a RIPE public IP address range and an RFC1918 private IP address range. The customer then allocates the private range to their servers and we configure the public IP range on our firewall and using network address tranlation we map the public IP addresses to the private ones, as specified by the customer.
