LINX From Anywhere

The London Internet Exchange

About LINX

LINX or the London Internet Exchange is one of the the largest internet exchange points in the world. The reputation of LINX is built on the standard of companies that use the exchange and also the quality of service they deliver.

What is an Internet Exchange?

An Internet Exchange Point is an organisation that has multiple members that all connect to each other over a common network. Each organisation can then request to peer with one another over the network and exchange prefixes or routing information. Once an organisation has agreed to peer and exchange prefixes, traffic to and from this organisation does not traverse the public internet but instead in this case via our network backbone adding a single hop and thus minimising latency.

The LINX Network

LINX has two physically separate networks to provide an extra level of fault tolerance, the Extreme LAN and the Foundry LAN. There are at least two switches from each vendor installed at each location, and all the locations are connected by multiple 10 Gbps Ethernet circuits via dark fibre.

Why LINX from Anywhere?

The LINX network is present in London at the following locations:

  • Telehouse North
  • Telehouse East
  • TeleCity Harbour Exchange
  • TeleCity Millharbour
  • TeleCityRedbus Interhouse Harbour Exchange
  • TeleCityRedbus Interhouse Sovereign House
  • TeleCityRedbus Interhouse Meridian Gate (Memaco House)

The UK Grid Network LTD joined LINX by taking colocation space in TeleCityRedbus Harbour Exchange and Telehouse North and installing high end Cisco routers to provide the BGP connectivity into LINX.

The cost of this and of course the circuits between London and Manchester might not be a cost effective option for some, so this is where LINX from anywhere via UK Grid comes into it's own.

LINX from anywhere means customers can use the UK Grid's infrastructure to connect directly into LINX and thus negate the need for expensive colocation and networking equipment. Once connected into LINX via our pseudo wire, customers have access to a huge list of potential peering partners and can literally save £100's per month in IP Transit costs and of course create a low latency network.

How do we connect?

UK Grid will provide a customer with a 100 Mbps layer 2 connection, or pseudo wire, from any of our Manchester locations. This link will connect directly into LINX thus removing the need for the customer to provide their own routing equipment, circuits and colocation. All the customer needs to do is join LINX and then start peering!

Pricing

LINX Anywhere Pseudo Wire
