The EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres / Green Grid

EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres

UK Grid’s Manchester data centre Manchester One @ Synergy House has been accepted as a participant in the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres

The code has been created in response to increasing energy consumption in data centres and the need to reduce the related environmental, economic and energy supply security impacts.

The aim is to inform and stimulate data centre operators and owners to reduce energy consumption in a cost-effective manner without hampering the mission critical function of data centres. The Code of Conduct aims to achieve this by improving understanding of energy demand within the data centre, raising awareness, and recommending energy efficient best practice and targets.

This Code of Conduct is a voluntary initiative aimed to bring interested data centre operators together, working in partnership to reduce the energy burden and carbon footprint data centres have on our planet. Parties signing up will be expected to follow the intent of this Code of Conduct and abide by a set of agreed commitments.

UK Grid, also members of the Green Grid, have put in place a set of best practice policies in a committed effort to reduce its energy utilisation and subsequent carbon footprint.

The Green Grid sets out a number of algorithms and matrices to summarise electricity usage and efficiency of a data centre. The most commonly adopted metric, known as PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) is a relationship between power drawn by IT load and power required to cool that IT load. It is through a number of innovative measures that UK Grid data centres operate at a low PUE and thus a lower than industry standard PUE of <1.35.

The resulting effect of these best practices is a low data centre carbon footprint.

UK Grid constantly re-visit its best practice polices and innovative data centre designs to maximise efficiency and further drive down the PUE's of its portfolio of data centres.
