Colocation Technical

When purchasing colocation with any provider there are many important technical aspects to consider.

Please see below for a full description of the technical benefits when colocating your infrastructure with us.

Bandwidth

UK Grid has a carefully engineered multihomed IP network that boasts 99.99% uptime. We sell IP transit by the CDR or Committed Data Rate. If you purchase 1Mbps, we will guarantee to reserve 1Mbps of network capacity for you.

You have the option to have your transit burstable or capped. Burstable means that should the network capacity be available, which it usually is as UK Grid ensures a 20% overhead capacity on our network at all times, then you can burst to the maximum capacity of the port you are on. If this is a 100Mbps port, capacity allowing, you can burst to 100Mbps. You are billed using 95th percentile billing for bursts over your CDR.

Capped transit means that you are restricted to a fixed CDR and cannot burst. Some customers prefer this to ensure they are in full control of their monthly finances.

Resilience

UK Grid operates a fully redundant Manchester and London network with multiple feeds to tier 1 providers. This allows us to provide independent IP transit from London and Manchester and also offer connectivity between both cities using our Long Reach Ethernet network. An example scenario would be a customer that colocates in London but would like redundancy for their solution in Manchester.

UK Grid customers colocating in London can use London transit for Internet traffic, they can also have a separate connection to Manchester where their redundant equipment would be colocated. We can then also provide Manchester transit for their Manchester colocation so there is no additional latency by pushing transit from one city to the other.

Network Monitoring

Our network is monitored 24 x 7 x 365. We have an in-house network monitoring system, plus we use various probes on the outside of our network giving us a full picture as to how our network is performing all of the time.

Managed Routers and Switches

Why not let our Cisco team support, configure and manage your network infrastructure for you. We can supply you with Routers and Switches and confgure them to your specification. The devices are fully supported and we will carry out any configuration changes for you, plus we stock spares in case of hardware related issues, providing a prompt SLA for hardware replacement.

Firewalling

We can firewall your colocation solution either on our shared firewall cluster or we can provide a dedicated firewall for your sole use.

For full information on our security offerings please take a look here

Uplink Speed

Our network is fully scalable and thus we can meet all bandwidth requirements. You have the choice of 10/100/1000 Mbps ports on our network and therefore as you grow, we can accommodate your expansion.

Unlimited IP Addresses

We don't charge for extra IP addresses, however, we abide by RIPE regulations and thus extra IP's have to be justified.

Online Power Metering

Some of the data centres we occupy provide online power metering whereby the customer can log into a control panel and view their sustained power usage. This helps our customers understand the power consumption of their servers when populating their data cabinets.

Online Bandwidth Monitoring

We provide real-time graphing of bandwidth usage. This allows our customers to plan and forecast their bandwidth usage and trends. It also assists in identifying unusual traffic profiles which could be a sign of a hacked or infected server.
